Nothing Is Getting Roasted for Copying the AirPods Max Bra Case

Nothing’s new wireless headphones, the Headphone 1 Pro, have a few notable upgrades: a three-driver system, pro features for audio mixing, and an updated design with premium materials, amongst others. But a lot of attention is being directed not at those upgrades but instead at... the carrying case.

Nothing is known for taking some risks in the design department (see: the whole look of the Phone 3, for example), and this time it took one of its bigger risks on the way you store your wireless headphones. Having seen and used a lot of carrying cases for wireless headphones, this case is definitely something.

First of all, it’s very AirPods Max-coded. It encases the bottom part of the wireless headphones (the earcups and everything on them), while the headband sticks out. Unlike the AirPods Max case, though, it is not made out of fake leather. This thing is hard plastic, like the kind you’d find on a cheaper pair of wireless earbuds or headphones. As some people have noted, that ends up adding a significant amount of weight.

In fact, the Headphone 1 Pro’s carrying case is 383g, which is actually more than the wireless headphones themselves. Those weigh in at 327g, which is just a bit lighter than the first-generation Headphone 1. Compare that to the AirPods Max 2 carrying case, which clocks in at 134.5g, and the difference is pretty drastic.

I’ve been using the Headphone 1 Pro for a while now, and the case hasn’t bothered me. To be honest, a 200g+ difference between this and the AirPods Max 2 case looks like a lot on paper, but most people (myself included) are going to be throwing the case in a bag. Everyone is different, but that extra 200g wasn’t enough to really break me. My back is doing just fine today after carrying the Headphone 1 Pro around last night.

There are some downsides to a case like this outside of weight, too, to be clear. The headband sticks out, leaving it unprotected, which might give anyone who spent $400 on a pair some unnecessary anxiety. On the plus side, though, the use of hard plastic better protects the earcups, which are made out of glass. Imagine your headphones getting squished inside a crappy cardboard-ass case and cracking the glass? That’d be more annoying than the extra weight.

There are trade-offs to the hard plastic case, sure. Maybe you’re really sensitive about the weight, but the look is pretty cool (even better when you slap a bunch of stickers on it), and I’ll sleep more soundly knowing that the glass isn’t getting crushed in my bag. Whether this case holds up to getting scratched to hell is another story entirely.
