Leaving a Corporate Job to Return to Patna

In 2010, Gautam Gauri left his successful corporate career to return to his home state of Bihar. Diksha Foundation began on a small scale, starting with a learning center in local settlements around Patna. Within days, 30 to 40 children enrolled, indicating a strong need for accessible education. Initially, the foundation relied on small donations from friends and supporters, with full transparency on fund usage.

The Role of Suchitra Gauri

About a year after its launch, Gautam’s mother, Suchitra Gauri, joined Diksha as a full-time volunteer. She played a vital role in making the learning centers more welcoming and humane, emphasizing that education should allow children to express themselves and ask questions.

In 2015, Gautam received a Commonwealth Scholarship and went to the University of Cambridge, where he completed an MPhil in Education. During Bihar’s scorching summers, Diksha’s learning centres serve as safe and supportive environments for children whose parents work in daily wage labour or other occupations. With support from Feeding India, meals are provided to children at the centres. These centres have evolved into community learning hubs where former students and mothers participate in activities, and children share their experiences and concerns.

The Birth of Suchitra Cancer Care Foundation

After losing his mother to cancer, Gautam founded the Suchitra Cancer Care Foundation (SCCF) in memory of his mother. The foundation conducts cancer awareness programs and provides trustworthy information to patients and families. It also hosts a podcast called Gautam OncoTalks, featuring conversations with oncologists from across India.

Using AI for Social Impact

SCCF is developing Suchi, an AI-powered cancer information guide to help patients and families understand medical information in regional languages such as Bhojpuri and Nepali. Diksha is developing Rusty, an AI tutor for the Bihar Board curriculum, supported by JPMorgan Chase’s Force for Good program. Gautam sees technology as a way to improve access to information and guidance, especially in resource-limited regions.
