The modern job search has devolved into a notoriously soul-crushing endeavor. Candidates fire hundreds of resumes into the void. They navigate an endless stream of expired ‘ghost jobs’. And they compete against automated mass-application bots for a fraction of the actual open roles.
It’s a frustrating, high-friction loop. Legacy job boards, built primarily around employer advertising models, have done little to solve it.
Now, a startup born from a viral spreadsheet is aiming to rebuild the job hunt from the ground up.
HiringCafe, an agentic job discovery platform, announced that it has raised $6.8 million in pre-seed funding. The funding will expand its real-time career search engine. Spark Capital led the round. Nonfiction Capital, Silicon Gardens, and strategic angel investors hailing from legacy incumbents ZipRecruiter and Indeed participated.
Alongside the funding, the company is taking the wraps off its new AI Talent Agent. It is a 100% free tool. It allows job seekers to deploy personalized AI to scour millions of open roles on their behalf.
Exposing the Hidden Job Market
The core thesis behind HiringCafe is that traditional job boards are fundamentally misaligned with the needs of candidates. Legacy platforms rely heavily on companies paying to promote their listings. Because of that, they surface only a sliver of the actual hiring market. This dynamic forces millions of applicants into a hyper-competitive bottleneck. They aggressively fight over the same sponsored listings.
“We realized that the modern job hunt is fundamentally broken because legacy platforms operate on an advertising model, not a true search model,” Hamed Nilforoshan, co-founder of HiringCafe, explained. “They only show you a fraction of jobs that companies pay to promote, which creates hyper-competition and widespread burnout. By using AI to index the entire long tail of the job market, we are finally bringing the other jobs out of the dark and leveling the playing field for everyday job seekers.”
Rather than waiting for employers to upload and sponsor roles, HiringCafe operates more like Google. It uses proprietary web-scraping technology and internet-wide search algorithms. The platform bypasses aggregators entirely. It directly indexes the career pages of millions of companies in real-time. Currently, HiringCafe claims to host over 5.7 million active job listings. That is up to 400% more than some of the most popular mainstream job boards.
HiringCafe is launching an AI Talent Agent to help users parse this massive, uncurated index. It is designed to act as a 24/7 personalized recruiter.
Instead of doom-scrolling through listings and tweaking keywords, users simply upload their resume. The AI instantly parses the candidate’s granular skills and experience. It then generates highly targeted role recommendations. Crucially, the agent operates around the clock. It continuously scouts HiringCafe’s real-time index to flag new opportunities the moment they go live on a company’s site.
The platform is also taking direct aim at one of the biggest pain points in the current market: ghost jobs. The company says it engineered its platform to aggressively filter out stale, fake, or permanently “open” listings. Companies leave these up to project false growth. The goal is that candidates are only applying to legitimate roles. Many new AI-powered career tools gate features behind premium subscriptions. HiringCafe’s agent is entirely free for job seekers.
A Viral Side Project Turned Venture-Backed Startup
HiringCafe’s origin story is a classic Silicon Valley tale of scratching a personal itch. In 2022, co-founder Ali Mir left his job to build an HR startup. Shortly after, a wave of macroeconomic headwinds triggered massive layoffs across the tech sector. To help out his newly unemployed friends, Mir built a simple, curated spreadsheet of 10,000 hard-to-find startup jobs.
That spreadsheet struck a nerve. It went repeatedly viral across social media, racking up millions of views. It starkly highlighted the pent-up demand for a better way to find work. Nilforoshan was pursuing a PhD at Stanford at the time. He saw the immense real-world impact of Mir’s tool and paused his studies to join him.
Without a dime spent on marketing, the duo managed to grow HiringCafe to over 2 million monthly active users. Word-of-mouth and a fiercely dedicated community on Reddit fueled that growth entirely.
That organic, product-led growth is exactly what caught the attention of venture capitalists.
“Ali and Hamed have the hallmark of great founders: a simple vision that seems obvious the moment they say it,” said Fraser Kelton, General Partner at Spark Capital. “HiringCafe is building the absolute best product for people looking for a job, not for people advertising jobs. Their growth so far, without any marketing spend, is a testament to how much people want a product genuinely focused on helping them find one.”
With fresh capital and an AI agent now deployed, HiringCafe faces the formidable challenge of taking on entrenched giants like LinkedIn and Indeed. Millions of applicants are currently staring down the black hole of the modern job application process. For them, a search engine built entirely for the candidate might be exactly what the market ordered.
