Google's got a new frontier AI model, but as is customary these days, it's not available to most people. Launched on Thursday, Google Gemini 4 Argon is a "frontier" AI model that's rolling out to a "set of trusted cyber defenders" through Google's Fairwind Program. With the move, Google follows OpenAI and Anthropic, which have also released their most capable models only to a trusted set of partners, mainly due to cybersecurity concerns. Gemini 4 Argon, as you might expect, is touted as an incredibly capable model that excels at software engineering, enterprise-class legal and financial work, and cybersecurity tasks. It is so powerful, Google claims, that it's already "fundamentally changing" how Google works and builds its products internally. In a blog post, the company offers some details as to what that means. In one example, a team of Argon agents analyzed memory usage in Google's data centers and optimized it, freeing over 300 TiB (tebibytes; one TiB is roughly 1.1 terabytes) of memory.

We get it, Argon is the new king of the hill...until the next one comes along.

According to Google's data, Gemini 4 Argon outperforms OpenAI GPT-6 Astra, Claude Fable 5.1, and Claude Opus 5.5 on most benchmarks. In the post, Google highlighted that it trained Argon to be particularly capable in cybersecurity defense and that it can "autonomously find, validate, and patch critical software vulnerabilities." Being able to detect cybersecurity holes works the other way, too, which is why Argon will be offered without guardrails only to trusted defenders and Google's internal teams.

As for pricing, Google says Argon will launch at introductory prices of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.
